Things To Do When Life Gets Stagnant

Karen Avidar

If you find yourself bored, feeling stuck or spending too much time sulking around, here are 5 things to do to reinvigorate your routine and get things moving again.

1. Book a class at a new studio

Taking a class at a studio you've never been to before might excite you or make you nervous, but that doesn't matter. Putting yourself in a new situation will automatically shift your mentality as you try to adapt to your surroundings. It could lead you to walk through a different neighborhood, take a new commute or stop at a local coffee shop after class. Creating opportunities to see different faces, buildings, and landscapes can give you a renewed sense of excitement or thrill, which are welcome emotions when going through a slow phase.

2. Learn how to do a headstand

This may seem like an odd one, but hey, you came here to change things up. This is a practice that could literally give you a new perspective. Going upside down helps blood move in a different direction, aids digestion and energizes the mind. If this seems like an impossible task, that's even more reason to try it. Challenging yourself to learn something new is a great way to get your motivation going and the small achievements along the way will provide encouragement. There are plenty of videos online to use as a guide or you can ask a local yoga teacher to help start you off.

3. Watch a travel show

It's not always realistic to go on a vacation, but this has a similar effect at a lower price point. Watching a travel documentary with a gripping storyline can help get you out of your head and into someone else's. It's a way to exit your own narrative and remind yourself of the bigger picture. Make sure to do your research and pick a good one.

4. Cook an elaborate meal

Planning a meal takes research, a trip to a grocery store and then a good amount of time to prepare. Giving yourself a task that has various steps is a way to get yourself moving, planning and making. There's the added benefit of enjoying something you prepared from start to end. If you're able to, try going to a farmer's market to get your supplies.
